Continuing Legal Education and Event Programming:

The Princeton Bar Association holds monthly Continuing Legal Education Luncheons throughout the spring, fall, and winter seasons. Our CLE programs are typically certified through the Pennsylvania Continuing Legal Education Board and approved PA programs are valid for 1:1 reciprocal credit in New Jersey, New York, and any other state that accepts reciprocity. Some of our programs may also be approved in New Jersey or other states. We meet the last Wednesday of the month from 12:30 – 2:00 pm at our host facility TPC Jasna Polana for networking, CLE, and a delicious gourmet lunch. Join us!

The Princeton Bar Association also organizes other business networking, community, and charitable events throughout the year, including golf outings at Jasna Polana.

Embracing AI while maintaining legal safeguards w/ Nishat Ruiter General Counsel of TED Conferences

Join Us for an Insightful CLE Luncheon on AI – October 2nd!

Embracing AI is the next paradigm that industries are turning to for speed, scale, cost, and radical re-organization and filtering of Information. Understanding what AI is, how it was created and the potential of its use raise several legal issues and ethical concerns that we should identify to understand our role, our approach and how to maintain the right safeguards in this nascent cycle of impactful technology.

1. AI – what is it (from details of Greg Brockman’s TED Talk – co-founder of Chat GPT) understanding the vision and utility across different
industries

2. How it is built – Ghost workers, and environmental costs hidden (extreme carbon cost and human labor vets data in early language
models, third party proprorietary information)

3. Where the law is going – addressing risks, limiting bias, ensuring transparency and accountability and the emergence of AI governance
programs within organizations. (Based on: Draft EU AI Act, White House Blueprint for AI Bill of rights, OECD AI Principles, NIST AI RMF).

4. Policy creation, managing governance – creating frameworks that align with the regulatory guidance can provide the right parameters for organizations to thrive and maintain guardrails to ensure compliance and add scale to their organization.

About our Speaker
Nishat Ruiter is the General Counsel and Secretary of TED Conferences, a nonprofit organization that believes passionately in the power of ideas to change attitudes, lives, and, ultimately, the world. Through creativity, and deep respect for TED’s mission, Nishat’s work is centered on ensuring that TED’s legal requirements are met through a combination of practical and creative solutions that meets its needs, while still retaining the authentic TED voice where possible. She manages strategy for legal issues across the org, helps implement and develop trademark, privacy, AI risk management, and compliance policies company-wide, and addresses all corporate issues for TED Foundation including licensing TED content across the world in all forms of media, acquisitions, partnerships, real estate licensing, marketing, clearing TED talks, developing templates, training, and code of conduct issues within the company with HR and at conferences.

Prior to TED, she worked for over 17 years as in-house counsel, and in private practice including working as Associate General Counsel at CA Technologies, a Fortune 500 software technology company as Head of the North American Sales legal department, advising on M&A with respect to integrating company operations for licensing, and advising on regulatory compliance issues for government sales, marketing, advertising, and social media.

Ayesha Hamilton, Esq.

Ayesha is an attorney licensed to practice law in New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania. She founded her law practice over 18 years ago and focuses on employment law. The Hamilton Law Firm team provides knowledgeable, compassionate and professional legal services to their individual and business clients from their offices located in Princeton, New Jersey.

In addition to her law practice, Ayesha serves as a trustee for the NJ State Bar Association and is the Secretary of the Mercer County Bar Association and the current secretary of the NJ State Bar Association’s Women in the Profession Section. She also serves on the Diversity Committee and the Committee on Racial Equity in the Law for the NJSBA and is the co-chair of the Mercer County Bar Association’s Civil Practice Committee. In addition, she serves on the employment law committee of the New Jersey Association of Justice and is also a member of the National Employment Lawyers Association-NJ and South Asian Bar Association-NJ. In 2020, she was appointed to serve on the State Bar’s Judicial and Prosecutorial Appointments Committee (JPAC) vetting judicial and prosecutor candidates for the NJ Governor’s office and was just elected to be a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation. Ayesha also serves on the NJSBA Commission on the Future of the Legal Profession and chairs the Panel examining non-lawyer ownership of law practices. Jennifer is licensed to practice law in New Jersey and New York. Jennifer is a Member of the Bayne Law Group LLC where she focuses her practice on complex commercial litigation and corporate transactions, employment law, and environmental law consulting. Hoda Rifai-Bashjawish, Esq.
Hoda is an Associate at Lerner David. She has a deep understanding of intellectual property issues, handling patent, trade secret, trademark, trade dress, and copyright matters, as well as IP portfolio counseling, protection, and enforcement. Her practice focuses on litigating complex intellectual property matters with a concentration on patent enforcement and validity. She also supports clients in managing and procuring intellectual property rights by prosecuting patent, trademark, and copyright applications, conducting M&A due diligence, negotiating transfer and license agreements, and preparing infringement and invalidity opinions. Essential Intellectual Property Issues for the General Practitioner

Dear Colleague: Please join the Princeton Bar Association on Wed. March 27th for a CLE luncheon on essential intellectual property issues for the general practitioner.

When it comes to intellectual property (patents, trademarks, copyrights), most general praactitioners and most clients have very little understanding of the actual issues. Rather, most tend to believe popular misconceptions. These misconceptions can easily cause a company to go out of business and make a lawyer vulnerable to malpractice. There are different types of patents, trademarks and copyrights. Each has a purpose. The general practitioner needs to know the basic issues involved in obtaining and protecting intellectual property and applying those IP rights through existing systems, such as the Amazon brand registry program and U.S. Customs in order to help clients start and grow their businesses.

Eric LaMorte, Esq. is an attorney who has exclusively practiced intellectual property law for 30 years. In that time, Mr. LaMorte has obtained over 1000 patents and over 1000 registered trademarks and has counseled hundreds of companies on matters involving intellectual property.

Presentation Summary.

Although lawyers rightly prize their knowledge of law and legal procedures, they sometimes overlook another capacity developed through the study and practice of law. Our ethical reasoning capacities have much to do with what makes us great practitioners, leaders, and agents of change. We will examine how the attorney’s capacity to reason about questions of ethics and fairness helps the lawyer in the traditional representation role, as counsel in the organization setting, and as leader and innovator.

About our Speaker.

Kevin Michels is a Professor at The College of New Jersey, where he directs the School of Business Center for Innovation and Ethics. Prior to that, he held the Curran Chair in Legal Ethics and Professionalism at Gonzaga Law School in Spokane, Washington, first as a visiting associate professor and later as a tenured associate professor. He is the author of New Jersey Attorney Ethics (Gann Law Books) and numerous law review articles. He served as law clerk to Justice Robert L. Clifford of the New Jersey Supreme Court for the 1986-87 term and, prior to joining academia, he practiced law with Michels & Hockenjos, L.L.C. He served on the New Jersey Supreme Court Commission on the Rules of Professional Conduct, and has lectured widely on legal ethics and professionalism. He is an elected member of the American Law Institute.

Judicial Ethics: On & Off the Bench with Judge Carchman

Please join us for our monthly CLE luncheon featuring the esteemed Judge Carchman speaking on Judicial Ethics: On & Off the Bench. All participants with receive a certificate valid for 1 CLE ethics credit and a gourmet lunch will be served. This course is designed for lawyers in all practice areas and levels.

While the judiciary is one of three branches of our tri-partite form of government, the public perceives the judiciary as different with an expectation that judges will conduct themselves both on and off the bench in a way that is different from those in the executive or legislative branches of government. Judges are not generally seen as politicians but as those charged with the responsibility of ensuring fairness in the judicial process to the end that decisions reflect the goal of achieving justice in every case. Judges are subject to a separate ethical code from lawyers and those in the other branches of government. The Code of Judicial Conduct governs a judge’s conduct in both a judge’s professional capacity and private life, and New Jersey’s version of the CJC imposes the strictest limitations in the country on judges activities off the bench. This lecture will explore the ethical constraints on judges with an emphasis on extrajudicial conduct. We will explore the CDC as well as cases that have addressed ethical issues as applied to judges as well as their personal and professional relationship with the public and specifically, the lawyers that they deal with on a daily basis.
